Troop 16 hiked the Appalachian Trail on May 12 and 22, 2011. The trail started in southern Massachusetts, and the boys and adult leaders spent the night at the Mt. Wilcox campsite. There was a 20-mile option for experienced hikers and six-mile option for new scouts. Many of the 20-mile hikers will do a 50-mile hike in August 2011.

More than 25 scouts and adults turned out at the Judge Samuel Holten House on Saturday, April 30, to help Derek LeBlanc with his Eagle project. Armed with rakes, shovels, wheelbarrows and tools, the troop cleaned up the yard and built compost bins. Congratulations to Derek, who planned and managed the project, and thank you to everyone who helped.

With more snow on the ground than we’ve had in years, the annual Klondike Derby at Endicott Park was especially memorable this year. Scouts and leaders camped out on Friday, January 28, and took part in activities on Saturday. Welcome to our igloo!

Members and adult leaders of Boy Scout Troop 16 presented Scoutmaster Dan Thornell with a cake celebrating his 50th birthday on Tuesday, December 7.

Important troop committee meeting

Troop 16 will hold its first committee meeting of the new scout year on Tuesday, September 14, from 7 to 9 p.m., at the Maple Street Church during the regular troop meeting.

The committee will hear from the Patrol Leaders Council about activities being planned for the coming year.

First troop meeting will be Sept. 14

The first fall meeting of Boy Scout Troop 16 will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 14, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Maple Street Church. Mr. Thornell, our scoutmaster, says this will be an important meeting. We hope all members will be able to attend.

Have a friend who’s interested in scouting? Bring him to the meeting! We want to see Troop 16 grow. Once he sees what cool things we do, he’ll be sure to want to join.

Boy Scout Troop 16 served nearly 500 people at it annual Spaghetti Supper at the Maple Street Church. The event, part of the Danvers Family Festival, featured everything from a classic Italian meal to a jazz band that includes several of our scouts and cotton candy outdoors. The Spaghetti Supper is Troop 16′s major fundraiser for the year, and it was, once again, quite a success. Congratulations to everyone involved.

Get ready for Troop 16′s annual Spaghetti Supper

Boy Scout Troop 16 of Danvers will hold its annual Spaghetti Supper on Wednesday, June 30, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Maple Street Congregational Church.

Several hundred guests will enjoy a meal of pasta, homemade sauce, salad, bread, dessert and assorted beverages in the church basement. The boys will also be serving cotton candy outside the church during and after the event.

The supper — Troop 16’s largest fundraising event of the year — is a traditional highlight of the Danvers Family Festival, and a great way to kick off Oldies Night in Danvers Square. Admission is $5 for individuals, $4 for seniors and children, and $15 for the entire family.

Troop 16 presents first Heroism Award

From left are scoutmaster Dan Thornell and scouts Allen and Troy Ellis.

Boy Scout Troop 16 presented its first Heroism Award on June 22 to Allen Ellis, who was recognized at the troop’s Court of Honor on June 22 at the Maple Street Congregational Church.

Allen was lauded by troop chairman Gregg Perry and scoutmaster Dan Thornell for calmly using his first-aid skills and calling 911 after his 3-year-old brother was burned by boiling water during a family camping trip last summer.

Allen’s younger brother Troy, also a member of Troop 16, received an honorable mention for helping to guide rescue workers to the scene.

Fellow troop members and a phalanx of Eagle scouts of all ages congratulated Allen and Troy for their bravery, one of the 12 points of the Scout Law.

The scouts are the sons of Robb and Kristen Ellis of Danvers.

Also at the Court of Honor, the troop recognized our two newest Eagle scouts, John Baker and Sky Blanchet. Twelve other boys also earned rank advancements from Tenderfoot through Star. Sixteen scouts earned 35 merit badges.

Congratulations to our scouts for their achievements.
